Getting started
How do I create an account?
Select "Start free" and enter your name, work email and a password. You start on the free Solo plan, and no card is needed.
Passwords need at least 10 characters, including a letter and a number.
What can I do in the dashboard?
Search the ingredient database, open any food for its full nutrient breakdown, compare ingredients side by side, rank nutritional substitutes, and follow live Food Standards Agency (FSA) recall and allergy alerts.
Your recent searches, views and comparisons appear on the Overview page.
How do I search for an ingredient?
Type part of a name, such as "lentil" or "oat". Every word you type must appear in the food name, in any order.
Narrow results by food group, or open "Nutrient filters" to set a minimum protein or a maximum fat, carbohydrate or sugar per 100 g. You can also sort by name, protein, energy, fat or carbohydrate.
Ingredient data
Where does the nutrition data come from?
From McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset (CoFID 2021), the UK government's official food composition data, published under the Open Government Licence. It covers 2,886 foods.
Each food page lists CoFID's own data references, so you can trace where every value came from.
How should I read the values?
Values are per 100 g of the edible portion. CoFID gives alcoholic drinks per 100 ml.
"—" means CoFID didn't report that nutrient for the food. A trace amount ("Tr" in CoFID) is shown as 0.
How often is the data updated?
We import new CoFID releases when the UK government publishes them. Each food page shows which release its data comes from.
Open Food Facts and functional protein data (such as gelation and solubility) are coming soon.
What is the food code?
The food code (for example 13-657) is CoFID's identifier for a food. It stays the same across our pages and CSV exports, so you can match records reliably.
Compare & substitute
How do I compare ingredients?
Select the + button next to any ingredient to add it to the comparison tray, then choose "Compare". You can also add ingredients directly on the Compare page.
Solo compares up to 2 ingredients at once. Starter and above compare up to 5. The best value in each row is highlighted.
How are substitution scores calculated?
The engine compares nutritional composition per 100 g (protein, fat, carbohydrate, sugars, fibre, water and energy) and returns a similarity score from 0 to 100%. You can limit results to the same food group.
Scores don't yet account for functional properties, price, allergens or supply risk. Always validate a substitute in formulation trials and against your supplier's specification.
Why can I only see 3 substitutes?
Solo and Starter show the top 3 matches. Pro shows the full ranked list.
Can I export data?
Yes, on Starter and above. Use "Export CSV" on the Ingredients page (up to 500 rows of your current search) or on the Compare page. Files open directly in Excel.
Personal data exports are separate: see "How do I download my data?" under Account & security.
Supply-risk alerts
Where do the alerts come from?
Directly from the Food Standards Agency's public alerts feed, refreshed every 15 minutes. Each alert links to the full notice on the FSA website.
What do Critical and Watch mean?
Critical covers product recalls and food alerts for action. Watch covers allergy alerts, for example undeclared allergens.
Why do I only see the latest few alerts?
Solo and Starter show the 3 most recent alerts. Pro shows the full live feed.
Watchlists that alert you about your own ingredients are coming soon. Weather and commodity price signals are planned.
Plans & billing
What counts towards the 30 searches on Solo?
Only text searches count. Browsing by food group, using nutrient filters, paging through results and the autocomplete in Compare and Substitutions are all free.
Typing a longer version of the same search ("len", then "lentils") counts once. Your quota resets on the 1st of each month, and you can track it in the sidebar and in Settings.
How do I upgrade or change plan?
Go to Settings → Plan & usage and select "Upgrade". Online checkout is launching soon. Until then, your request comes to our team and we switch your plan for you.
Once checkout is live, you'll manage your plan, payment method and invoices yourself from "Manage billing".
Is there a free trial?
When online checkout launches, Starter and Pro will include a 14-day free trial, one per account. You won't need a card to start it. If you haven't added one by the end, your account simply returns to the free Solo plan.
How do I cancel?
You can cancel any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep paid features until then. Fees already paid aren't refunded, except where the law requires.
Do prices include VAT? How can I pay?
Prices exclude VAT, which is added where applicable. Payments will be processed securely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
You'll be able to pay by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. For Enterprise payment terms, talk to our sales team.
Account & security
I forgot my password
Select "Forgot password?" on the sign-in page and enter your email. We'll send a reset link that works once and expires after 60 minutes. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder or contact support.
Why was I signed out?
Sessions last up to 7 days. For your security, changing or resetting your password signs out every other device. Just sign in again.
How do I change my email address?
For security, email changes are handled by our support team. Contact us from your current address and we'll update it.
How do I download my data?
Go to Settings → Privacy & data and select "Export". You'll get a JSON file with your profile and activity history, in line with your rights under UK GDPR.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Delete account and confirm with your password. This permanently deletes your account and activity history, and cancels any active subscription immediately.
We keep billing records only as long as UK tax law requires.
Privacy & cookies
Do you sell or share my data?
No. We never sell personal data, and we never use your data to train models offered to other customers. Our Privacy Policy lists exactly what we collect and who processes it for us.
